Crowdboard

Year-end party game

End the year with a game the whole office plays.

Crowdboard puts a game-show board on the TV. Two teams guess the most popular answers, buzzing in from their own phones, and the best questions are about the year your team has had. It runs in a web browser, so there’s nothing to install.

Free for up to 6 phones. No card needed.

Why it works at a year-end party

  • About your year, in their words

Send a survey link a week or two before. Colleagues’ answers about the year become the board, so every round is about your team.

  • Everyone can guess

Survey questions ask what most people said, not what an expert knows, so the newest starter has as good a chance as the boss.

  • For whatever people celebrate

The questions here are about wrapping up the year and starting the next one, not any one holiday, so the whole office can play.

  • Office and home together

Share the board in Teams, Zoom or Meet, and colleagues at home buzz in from their own phones, which show the board as well.

  • Short enough for the night

About 20 minutes from the first question to the Lightning Round, so it fits between dinner and the speeches.

  • Nothing to hand out

Players scan the code on the TV with their phone camera, type a name and pick a team. No app, no player accounts, no buzzers to buy.

Two weeks to a great game

Sign in on the host’s laptop. Everything else runs in a web browser.

  1. 1

Two weeks before: ask the questions

Make a survey from the questions below, or your own, and send the link in the team chat. Colleagues answer on their phones in a minute, with no account. See how to write survey questions.

  2. 2

A week before: check the room

Open Check a network on the venue’s Wi-Fi. Then, under Surveys in your account, Invite people to the game makes a calendar invite that says how to join on the night.

  3. 3

The day before: a practice run

Open the board on the TV you’ll use, and play a practice game with two practice phones from the host deck.

  4. 4

    On the night: play

Turn the survey into a game, put the board on the TV, and let the phones join from the code. Keep a prize back for the Lightning Round.

  5. 5

    The day after: share it

Send the game’s recap link in the team chat: the scores and every question, for anyone who missed the party.

Questions about your year

Put these in a survey before the party. There are no answers here on purpose: your team’s own answers make the board.

  • Name the best thing that happened at work this year
  • Name a word that sums up our year
  • Name something our team got better at this year
  • Name a moment at work this year that made you laugh
  • Name something you’re proud the team did this year
  • Name a habit you want to take into next year
  • Name something you’d like the team to try next year
  • Name something the office can’t run out of

They’re filled in for you to change before you share the link.

Where the questions come from

  • Your team’s own

Turn the survey into a game in a few clicks, or write questions about the year in the game editor, and mix them with ready-made ones.

  • Ready-made

On the host deck, pick Office party, and Crowdboard draws a game of 4 rounds and a Lightning Round, about 20 minutes from the question bank, fresh every time.

  • New for the season

Pro, Team and Enterprise get the Year-end wrap-up pack from 1 December: new questions about the end of the year and the start of the next, to build a game from in the game editor.

Tips from the host’s side

  • Mix the teams

Put people from different departments or offices together. Half the fun is finding out what finance thinks the year was about.

  • Keep a prize back

The game ends with the Lightning Round: two players, five quick questions and a ticking clock. A small prize makes it count.

  • In a big room, play by table

One phone per table works well: the table shouts the answer, and its player buzzes in.

  • Hand over a phone

Give a helper the scorekeeper phone for the Lightning Round, and run the game from the host remote on your own phone while you walk the room.

Questions hosts ask

How many people can play?

Any number of people can watch and shout answers. Up to 6 phones can buzz in on Free, 20 on Pro and 40 on Team.

We only need it for one party. What does it cost?

Free covers up to 6 phones. For one party, an Event pass is $19 for 7 days of Pro: up to 20 phones and the whole question bank, including the Year-end wrap-up pack, with nothing to cancel afterwards. See the plans.

Does everyone need a phone?

No. Anyone can watch and shout answers. Without phones, the host can mark who buzzed first instead.

Will it work at the venue?

Usually with no changes, and phones can use mobile data if the Wi-Fi is busy. To be sure, open Check a network there a few days before.

Can we play in two languages?

Players’ phones and the board work in English and Arabic, and a question can carry both, so the whole office plays one game.
