Before the night
Will it work on our network?
Open Check a network on that network a few days before: on the laptop for the host deck, the TV’s browser and a phone. It takes about ten seconds. If the network blocks live games, it gives you a report for your IT team, and Crowdboard on a company network lists what they need to allow.
What do we need?
A laptop or computer for the host deck, a TV or projector for the board, and players’ phones. Nothing to install, and players need no account. The host signs in, free, so the deck can open a room for phones.
How many phones can join?
Up to 6 phones on Free, 20 on Pro, 40 on Team and 200 on Enterprise. Everyone else can watch the TV and shout answers, and a family can share one phone.
Can I practise first?
The demo plays a face-off with the deck, the TV, two phones and the remote side by side, with no sign-in. To rehearse your own game, open the host deck with the TV board in a second window and join from your own phone.
Getting everyone in
How do I put the board on the TV?
On the host deck, open the TV board and drag its window onto the TV, then press F or double-click for full screen. A TV with its own browser can open the board’s address instead: the deck shows it, with the room code.
How do players join?
The TV shows a QR code for each family. Players scan their family’s code, or go to crowdboard.app/play and type the room code, then type their name.
Someone arrived after we started
Once the game starts, new phones ask to join, and you let them in or turn them away under Phones on the deck. “New phones can join” there changes it to any time, or to no new phones.
Two people have the same name
The second one is asked to add an initial or a nickname, so everyone can tell them apart.
The room is full
The deck says so under Phones. Forget a phone that left, or take a player out, to free a place. On Free, the deck also shows how to get more phones for the day.
During the game
I pressed the wrong thing
Press Undo at the top of the deck, or Ctrl+Z. It steps back one action at a time: reveals, strikes, awards and overrides. Overrides, beside it, can also set scores and strikes by hand.
Can I run it from my phone?
Yes. Under Phones on the deck, press Show remote code and scan it. Your phone gets the deck’s controls and the answers, so you can read the questions, reveal answers and mark strikes while you walk the room. Keep that code off the TV.
A player’s phone dropped out
Reloading the page puts it back in its place. If a player has gone for good, forget their phone or take them out under Phones.
Some of us are working from home
Share the TV board’s window in your video call, and remote players join from their phones with the room code. Team building for remote teams has more.
If something goes wrong
The deck says the network blocks live games
Turn off a VPN, or connect the deck’s computer to another Wi-Fi or a phone’s hotspot. Players can switch to mobile data. Until then, run the game from the deck without phones: families call out answers and you reveal them.
The host laptop reloaded or closed
Open crowdboard.app/host again in the same browser. The game picks up where it was, the room keeps its code, and the TV and phones follow.
The TV says there’s no game with that code
The code is in the board’s address. Check it under Phones on the host deck, where the deck also shows the full address to open on the TV. Codes are four letters.

Keys on the host deck
| Key | What it does |
|---|---|
| 1–8 | Reveal answer |
| X | Wrong answer (a strike once a family plays the board) |
| S | Show one X without counting it |
| Space | Award round bank |
| D | Lightning Round duplicate buzzer |
| 1–9 · 0 · P | Lightning Round: lock in that survey answer · not on the survey · pass |
| Ctrl+Z | Undo last action |
Keys do nothing while you’re typing in a box, and a revealed answer can’t be revealed twice by a stray key. If you use speech input or a screen reader, turn the one-key shortcuts off under Keys on the deck; Ctrl+Z still undoes.
